Borrowdale with Grange

WELCOME TO THE CHURCHES IN THE BORROWDALE VALLEY

We are delighted to welcome visitors to our valley churches, whether you pop in for a moment of peace, or shelter from the rain, or worship with us.

In the churches you will find some helpful booklets of local interest as well as spiritual help, as well as an opportunity for you to leave your prayer requests.

There are also a few things for you to purchase. We do rely on the generosity of our visitors as well as our local community to maintain our churches for all who dwell and visit here.

The Borrowdale Churchyard surrounds St Andrew's in Stonethwaite - a lovely peaceful place where generations of valley families have been laid to rest

Borrowdale Church of England School nestles close to the church in Stonethwaite. Just to look at it is to realise that it is a safe and beautiful place for any child privileged to belong to it. A recently added feature in St Andrew's Church is the Borrowdale Batik- a depiction of the Borrowdale Valley by the school children under the direction of a local artist, Diane Cannon.

Enquiries are always welcome to the head teacher Mrs Richardson on 017687 77686

We are sometimes asked about weddings, renewal of marriage vows, baptisms and funerals, and the churchyard. We welcome all such enquiries even if we are not always able to fulfil everyone's hopes and dreams.

Revd Gay Pye lives in the vicarage in Stonethwaite near the church. Please do call or ring on 017687 77238 if you are need of help.

A QUESTION OF FAITH....

It may be that you are wondering what makes some people believe in God?

You may ask.. What is a Christian anyway? It may be that you have been disillusioned or disappointed by a church experience or something that life has handed to you....

The simple truth is that God is love and while believing in Him does not mean that stuff doesn't happen to us - it does - it does mean that God is there with us in the darkest night, the deepest valley, the intense loneliness, the unanswered questions.

He climbs down into the darkness with us with his strength and comfort and the resources which we need to cope.

And just for life's every day journey, the sense of purpose, the joy, peace, possibility of forgiving and being forgiven, generosity of heart and spirit, wholeness of life and doing good are all there in the Christian faith.

Someone who does not have faith told me recently, "I go to church about three times a year and specially on Good Friday because it seems to me that is when Christiainity is at its best". Coming from a man who calls himself an atheist, that is a profoundly moving statement as, in spite of not believing, he recognises the power of love in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

"I will lift my eyes up to the hills.

Where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord who made the heaven and the earth."

Lord, we ask for your blessing on our valley, on all who live here and those who come and go, on our school and our farms, our homes and families, on all those who offer hospitality.

We ask for your blessing on our visitors and the places from which they come.

Keep safe those who walk the fells, and meet the needs of those whose hearts are heavy.

We ask for your blessing on our broken world.

Show us your love. AMEN

Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity Church

Location NY252175 A

The driving force behind Holy Trinity - built 1860 - was Miss Margaret Heathcote of Borrowdale Gates - whose photograph and short biography may be seen in the church porch. The porch and vestry are a later (1882) addition. The most striking feature is the prevalance of Norman style dogtooth decoration, in both wood and stone. Two panels in the Sanctuary bearing the Ten Commandments were painted by Miss Heathcote herself. The church has disabled access. There are toilets in the village and two tea rooms with seasonal opening hours.
